Excavating more of the Cave

Here's The Plan, Stan!

Drill some lines of holes through the concrete, then knock it out chunk by chunk with your generously donated sheer strength. Oh, and sledgehammers.


Had to let the drill rest between holes a lot. Got a little too hot.

These pictures kinda show how on the other side of this concrete half-wall, it's all dirt. This is the dungeon/cave/root cellar. When they added onto this house, they tried and tried to dig out that dirt, but there's a giant rock down there. (A leaverite. Leave-er-right-there!) After 3 days of jack-hammering away at it, they gave up, and buried it with dirt. We think they intended for it to just be a crawl space after that, and they put that half-wall up. We still want to use it for storage. Rather than having to jump over the wall each time, a good friend suggested cutting out the concrete to put in a full size door, and then just building steps up to the level we put the floor at. Good idea! Otherwise, it's not as accessible. (Before the idea of a full-size door, I wanted to make it a fun play room for kids. Like a fort.)

Since then, Troy decided to dig out as much as possible. The cement footings on the far side walls are all at different levels, thanks to the bedrock and "Leaverites". So it's gonna be a storage room with many different levels. Next time we update on this project, we'll have some pictures of the hundreds of buckets of dirt and rocks (it's half rocks!) that have been hauled out of here the past few weeks.
